Sea Kayaking Queen Charlotte Sounds

This time we went to Anakiwa and paddled to Endeavor sound, we spent 3 days paddling around 100 km in winds up to 35 knots and 4 feet waves. The weather was great but the wind was strong.

Loreto Kayak Symposium 2011

Last week ended the long series that started in October as the Loreto Kayak Symposium on the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. The classes happening here are simple, yet of tremendous importance. Loreto is on the cusp of government sponsored mega-development on the scale of Cancun and Los Cabos. These kayaking events provide tools, inspiration, and voice for sustainability in development, from both ecological and economic standpoints.

Symposium festivities were enhanced by competition prizes donated by Kokatat, Werner, NRS, Seals and Cascade Designs. Appreciative winners of the solo kids’ race, the kids & parents race, an obstacle course, and a long distance race, took home top quality gear to inspire their continued paddling and camping experiences. Thanks to our sponsors!

At a weekend beach festival in October, university students offered short presentations on the beach. Abraham Levy, a Mexican who paddled the entire coastline of Mexico, gave a rousing presentation at the university. British Canoe Union courses carried on for the next week and a half, and brought participants from Venezuela, Canada, and Australia as well as Mexico. For logistical and economic reasons, a 21-day Expedition Challenge from Mulege to Loreto was sandwiched into the event. Paddlers hailed from Sweden, Australia, Georgia, California, and Washington state.

In two years of Loreto Kayak Symposium, years of prior classes crystallized into some real progress. In October 2010, three Mexicans became certified as BCU coaches—Ivette Granados, Santiago Berrueta , and Yuriria Hernandez (and 1 Canadian Leah Blok who works in Baja). Since then, one more Mexican, Oscar Manguy has become a Coach 1, Santiago has trained for Coach 2, and both Oscar and his wife Yuriria Hernandez have trained for their 4-star Sea Leadership awards. Santiago already has this leadership award, making him the first and so far only Mexican to hold this challenging certification. The series ended this week with a simple class of great significance: mentoring the first generation of British-certified Mexican coaches as they train the university interns who will likely become the future guides and owners. - Ginni Callahan

Marahau is the gate to Abel Tasman National Park and the place to sea kayak in New Zealand, every minute you see groups of people getting out in kayaks to explore the park.

How to fix your drysuit neck gasket in 8 steps

Here is what you need to fix your neck gasket from your drysuit

Check list:
- Basketball or soccer ball
- Pump
- 1 tube of Aqua seal
- 1 or 2 brushes
- Sandpaper number 400
- New gasket
- Latex gloves
- Tape
- Sharp blade or cutter
- 2 alcohol pads

This process will take you 40 minutes to 1 hr. plus 8 hrs. of drying time

STEP ONE:
Place the basketball (no air in it) in the neck of your drysuit

Pump the basketball until gets hard and gives a good shape to the gasket.

Will look like this:

STEP TWO:
Use the cutter and start cutting IMPORTANT you need to leave an inch from the old gasket, here is where you are going to connect the new gasket to.

STEP THREE:
Sandpaper the old gasket and the outside of your new gasket

When you finish turn your gasket inside out

STEP FOUR:
Clean the leftover gasket and the new gasket with the alcohol pads

STEP FIVE:
Apply aqua seal in the leftover gasket using the brush, make sure that you use the latex gloves

STEP SIX:
Place the new gasket on top of the basketball and start placing it in line with the leftover gasket. IMPORTANT: Remember that you are doing this process inside out, make sure that your gasket is inside out before you place it.

STEP SEVEN:
Use tape to hold the new gasket in place

STEP EIGHT:
Wait for 8 hours letting the aqua seal dry, remove the tape and the basketball.

After 8 hours

Ready to take it rolling

1999-2001= 15 months of expedition in the peninsula of Baja California.
The expedition members Alfonso Cardona, Fabiola Renau and Oscar Manguy.
We completed a log hike, 461 days hiking in the Baja coast from the sea of Cortez to the pacific ocean.

Playa Titirangui

Titirangui es un sitio que fue ocupado por los Maori hace 800 años, en este lugar ellos cultivaron kumara o camote, tambien hacian buceo de paua o abulon y caza de moa. Moa es un ave increíblemente gigante.

Cuando fallece un amigo nos sentimos desolados y más cuando ese amigo era alguien especial. Ya sea porque hizo algo diferente o porque tenía un don que plasmaba en su quehacer cotidiano.

Y éste era el caso del extraordinario fotógrafo mexicalense Alfonso Cardona Sánchez, fallecido a consecuencia del cáncer a los 55 años en Mexicali, el pasado 11 de noviembre.

Alfonso, en sus más de 30 años de fotógrafo plasmó imágenes de increíble belleza de nuestras tierras bajacalifornianas. Cualquiera que haya visto sus fotos estará de acuerdo que su trabajo no le pedía nada a los grandes artistas de la lente de Los Ángeles, Nueva York, Francia, Inglaterra o Japón.

Hoy recuerdo con gran nostalgia cómo en una ocasión, no hace mucho, llegó a mi casa acompañado de su hermano Arturo (lo hizo muchas veces) y rápido organizamos con los viejos amigos de la palomilla una "reunión fotográfica" y nos proyectó en su cañón más de 1 mil 200 transparencias de tarjeta postal y almanaque... ¡qué ojo y qué sensibilidad!, ante nuestros ojos desfilaron las montañas, el mar, pescadores, amaneceres y atardeceres, rancherías olvidadas, vestigios coloniales, amistosos lugareños, águilas, gaviotas, cactus y flores.

Alfonso comía y respiraba fotografía, y supo llevarla a otro nivel. Sus fotos tienen un aura mística imposible de describir con palabras. Al paso de los años me acostumbré a verlo con su inseparable cámara al hombro como una extensión de su propio cuerpo. Llegué a sospechar que dormía con ella.

Su arte era inigualable y ecológicamente comprometido, por ello emprendió su recorrido a pie por toda la península de Baja California en una gran aventura de matices muy enriquecedores (Proyecto Península 1999-2000) ya que pudo constatar de primera mano todas las bondades de nuestra tierra así como las carencias y costumbres de sus habitantes.

Recorrió cada kilómetro, cada metro y cada rincón como ningún fotógrafo mexicano (o extranjero) lo había hecho. Creía en sus sueños y fue a retratarlos. Nadie como él tuvo el valor y la visión de cristalizar travesía tan temeraria sorteando todo tipo de obstáculos.

Durante su singular trayecto, Alfonso Cardona y sus amigos que lo acompañaron, recibieron de los pobladores peninsulares numerosas muestras de cariño y hospitalidad, ofreciéndoles aliento para continuar con su prolongada y pesada marcha. En Santa Rosalía, Mulegé, Loreto y otras poblaciones fueron invitados a ofrecer conferencias y pláticas.

En una de tantas entrevistas le preguntaron a Alfonso qué tenía pensado hacer con la enorme cantidad de fotografías que había captado (más de 35 mil imágenes en dos viajes) y él respondió: "Vamos a formar un archivo que reúna todas las condiciones de conservación para las fotos, y de ahí formar una fototeca que es un trabajo más completo que el archivo fotográfico del Estado. Queremos que sirva como una especie de memoria de fin de siglo en la península. Un regalo, un obsequio, un testimonio para toda la comunidad".

Poncho, que también fue maestro universitario de su especialidad y coordinador del Fondo Latinoamericano de Fotografía, ha recibido emotivas palabras de despedida en su página personal (facebook.com/proyectopeninsula) así como condolencias para su familia.

Tal y como sucede con muchos artistas, suponemos que su trabajo va a ser más valorado ahora que ya no está con nosotros.

Toca ahora a la comunidad de fotógrafos locales (o ensenadenses donde vivió por muchos años) montar una exposición con su extenso trabajo.

No se trataría de ver únicamente fotos bonitas montadas en la pared de cualquier galería para cumplir el requisito oficial de una exposición sino de apreciar a alguien especial que vivió por y para la fotografía profesional, haciendo un enorme recorrido a pie por miles y miles de kilómetros por toda nuestra península, captando así el corazón mismo de su tierra... ¿qué fotógrafo puede presumir de eso?

Su obra queda como herencia para las futuras generaciones. Y eso, es un consuelo tan necesario por la gran tristeza que nos invade a todos los que fuimos sus amigos. Quizá por ello la atmósfera ha estado fría y gris en estos días. Las cámaras fotográficas han perdido su enfoque. Se veló el rollo. La imagen salió borrosa. El cuarto oscuro está cerrado. Las bellas imágenes han cesado. Alfonso se ha ido.

Cuando, donde y como? con quien? a que hora? y de que?, siempre hay preguntas y muy poco silencio, siempre hay acción y muy poca reflexión. En estos días he estado pensando en el viaje que realice unos días atrás en Prince William Sound, he pensado en lo maravilloso que es disfrutar de la libertad del mar, lo importante que es conocer nuevos lugares y de alimentar la Aventura de la vida. Hay que seguir adelante para poder ver los pasos que dejamos atrás o la estela que deja tu kayak en el mar. La vida es corta y hay muchos destinos que ver, hay que viajar ligero y con mucha decisión, hay que estar agradecidos y continuar en el camino.

El glaciar Nellie Juan esta ubicado en Port Nellie Juan rumbo a Kings bay, este sitio es un lugar importante en Prince William Sound debido a que tiene un glaciar de costa (marea), en Prince Williams Sound hay 20 glaciares de marea. Los glaciares de marea ofrecen un nicho para focas, nutrias y distintas aves. Nellie Juan esta rodeado por granito.

Javier Alberto Arce Mesa "Richie" es el actual maestro de la materia de Kayak de Mar en UABCS, La Paz, México.

Javier inicio esta carrera de kayak de mar algún tiempo atrás cuando realizo una expedición con una nombrada escuela internacional de liderazgo y expediciones, este curso fue la brecha que inicio su carrera en las actividades al aire libre profesionalmente; ya que Javier cuenta con una experiencia empírica increíble. Javier creció en la Sierra de la Giganta donde el aprendió a vivir en contacto con la naturaleza mano a mano; recuerdo un dia que me comento que para ir a la escuela caminaba 20 k de ida y 20 k de vuelta en un dia.

El andar por el desierto le despertó habilidades que solo la gente que crece en ese entorno puede desarrollar. En esta temporada Javier obtuvo el primer lugar a nivel Nacional en fotografía de campo, los críticos mencionaron que su fotografía es muy sensible al entorno y la naturaleza.

Javier esta terminando su tesis en Senderismo, tesis que sera un aporte para los estudiantes y egresados de la carrera de turismo alternativo de la universidad. Javier esta activo y sigue actualizando sus viajes y experiencias.

Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur - Practica de Kayak de Mar

La practica de kayak de mar en UABCS ha tenido una demanda alta, los estudiantes estan motivados por aprender esta actividad y estan entregando su energia a este deporte acuatico.

Las practicas se estan realizando en la "la Bahia de la Paz" con recorridos a los manglares del Mogote, la costa del Malecon, Balandra y Tecolote.

Las clases son teorico y practico. Los temas que se desarrollan en esta clase son: tecnica de remado, manipulacion del kayak de mar, rescates solos y asistidos, manejo de grupo, desarrollo de rutas y seguridad en el mar.

Los invitamos a que se unan a este deporte y disfruten las hermosas costas de la Baja California.

Gracias a UABCS por aceptar la propuesta de esta materia, Gracias a "Richie" Javier Arce Mesa por ser un muy buen maestro y gracias al "Estudiantito" Alejandro Estrada por apoyar la Clase.

Estos crustaceos los encontramos en los canales principales del Archipielago de los Chonos, ellos viajan en grupos y en filas, todos tienen el mismo color y nadan a una distancia de 1 mt de la superficie.

CLIMA TEMPLADO FRIO DE COSTA OCCIDENTAL CON MAXIMA INVERNAL DE LLUVIAS.

Es el mismo clima que corresponde a la parte sur de la X Región y que se extiende por la región de los canales hasta el Estrecho de Magallanes. En la XI Región cubre todo el sector de los canales australes y la ladera occidental de la cordillera patagónica, excluyendo los Campos de Hielo.

La principal característica son las intensas precipitaciones que ocurren todo el año, aunque el período más lluvioso continúa siendo de mayo a agosto, donde cae el 45% del total anual. Los totales anuales pueden alcanzar los 4.000 mm. En este clima, ya se puede apreciar que el mes más lluvioso es mayo o junio. Estas precipitaciones son asociadas con intensos vientos del noroeste y norte, los cuales presentan sus mayores frecuencias en verano. En invierno es más fácil encontrar períodos con condiciones de viento favorables al desarrollo de actividades de explotación de recursos y a la navegación.

Las temperaturas continúan disminuyendo con la latitud, pero la influencia marítima, reforzada por la acción de los vientos, hace que no sean extremadamente bajas. Las temperaturas medias de los meses más fríos, raramente descienden de 4º C. Por los mismos motivos, las amplitudes térmicas no son muy elevadas; la amplitud térmica anual en Aysén es inferior 10º C, en tanto la amplitud diaria varía a través del año entre 5º y 7º C.

La influencia marítima y las altas precipitaciones se manifiestan también en los altos valores que alcanza la humedad atmosférica, la que presenta un valor medio anual de 87% en Aysén, sin haber ningún mes con humedad relativa inferior a 80%. Otra característica asociada es el predominio de una gran cantidad de nubosidad durante todo el año.

The challenge and the beauty of ocen paddling is that no two days are alike. You wake up in the predawn light, unzip the tent, and the sea greets you with anything from a roar of boisterous energy to the gentlest wave recending over the colored stones of a gravel beach. The winds and waves, or the lack of them, set the pace and the mood of the day.

Days of wild winds and breaking waves leave little time for daydreaming and wandering mentally. The windsand, consequently, the waves, demand that the paddler stay alert. The day is spent anticipating the unexpected: Gauging the speed and angle of the waves as each one approaches the boat, monitoring the ever-changing subtleties of wind direcctions and speed, being aware of the energy spent controlling the boat and how much longer one can maintain the pace, and continually, though subconsciously, being aware of how narrow the edge is between the high of running with the sea and the consequenses if something were suddlently to go wrong. The high-energy days are the ones that are remembered simple because of the intensity with which the days is lived.
